CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION - The restoration work at St. Bernard Church in Eureka finished (for the time being) in early 2018 and I started the fascinating restoration of a mural painted in 1896 and hidden under paint and acoustic tiles for 100 years. There was apparently no one currently living who'd ever seen this mural when it dominated the Church of the Assumption in Ferndale, but a parishioner who'd seen a historic photo in the town museum, became curious and pulled off several acoustic tiles behind the altar. There were still very strong remnants behind a layer of thick clay paint. Since there was a great deal of damage from earthquakes, I was brought in because of my experience with old plaster. Intially asked if I might be able to "touch-up" the mural, I ended up spending the next nine months atop a man-lift repainting the entire mural, stroke for stroke.
