Work and Projects from 2020:
PORTRAITS - Work on portraits begun around the turn of the century continues. All of these are oil on canvas with an overall size of 30 x 24 inches.
Church of the Assumption, Ferndale - The pews of the church were restored with a graining technique in a quarter-sawn oak look similar to the original done in 1896. Sounds easy, but...
The pews were originally intended to be grained when first built back in 1896. They are all made from beautiful old-growth redwood, but never clear-coated so stripping back to wood was not an option. The first primer and base coat had lead, so they had to be re-grained. Like in a lot of cases locally, that beautiful old-growth redwood was considered a trash wood, very cheap and common. So they were grained to mimic a more desirable quarter-sawn oak.
At some point, when they were first painted white, the pews didn't get a proper prepping and all subsequent coatings could easily be chipped off. I had to spend qute a bit of time stripping off these loose layers before applying a base color.
The last three images show some uncovered traces of the original (1896) graining.
